Nguyen Makes Stunning Debut and Leads by Three Strokes
DURHAM , N.C. (June 14, 2016) -- First round results of the 67th North Carolina Women's Amateur Championship of the North Carolina Women's Golf Association at Croasdaile Country Club in Durham, N.C. on June 14 (6,025 yards, Par 36-36--72, Course Rating: 75.1/138).
Bryana Nguyen of Chapel Hill was the only player under par in Tuesday's first round and leads the field by 3 strokes
Blue skies and a light breeze accompanied the first round of the North Carolina Women's Amateur Championship hosted by Croasdaile Country Club in Durham, N.C. Soft, smooth greens provided excellent scoring conditions and first-time competitor Bryana Nguyen of Chapel Hill, N.C. took advantage. "The greens are not too fast, but they're really smooth and it's really nice to putt on them. It's a good course. There's a lot of doglegs out there, but I really like the course and played well." Nguyen, a rising junior at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, leads the field of 69 players after firing a first round 3-under-par 69.
Nguyen stuck her approach shots on the first six holes to six feet or less, which led to four consecutive birdies. Her birdie run included the tricky 501-yard Par-5 4th, which was the fourth most difficult hole for the field in the first round. Nguyen credits her dialed-in irons and putting, especially six feet and in, for her great round. "I didn't hit too many drivers out there, so placement [off the tee] was definitely key to have a shorter club in. My putting definitely helped, but irons were the main reason I shot under [par] today." Nguyen ended her round with 6 birdies and 3 bogeys to lead the field by 3 strokes.
Defending Champion Sarah Spicer of Bahama, N.C. struggled in the first round. Spicer recorded a first round 82 which places her in 22nd for the championship.
Recent Carolinas Women's Amateur Champion Ashley Sloup of Southport, N.C. finished with a one-over-par 73 to start the championship. Sloup, who finished fifth at this championship last year, will enter the second round four strokes behind Nguyen, but looks forward to tomorrow. "I think this course is really score-able and it's in good shape, so if you are hitting the ball well and putting well, it's definitely possible to go low." Joining Sloup and Nguyen in the final grouping is Catherine Ashworth of Fuquay Varina, N.C. Ashworth recorded three birdies against three bogeys for an even-par 72. "Today I just stayed steady, putted pretty well, got up and down a good amount of times because I wasn't hitting greens. I bogeyed three out of my last five holes, so that was a tough finish. I feel like I left a little bit out there." Ashworth will begin her second round three strokes behind the leader, but thinks low numbers are still out there. "Two of [the Par-5s] are definitely reachable in two and the greens are rolling so good, you can definitely make some putts for birdies."
The Overall Champion, Junior Champion and Senior Champion (50+) will be determined from contestants competing in the Championship Division. Kim Briele, 55, of New Bern, N.C. and Angela Stewart, 61, of Greenville, N.C. each carded rounds of 7-over-par 79 and are tied for the top senior spot. The Super Senior Champion (62+) will be determined from contestants competing in the State Division. Recent North Carolina Senior Women's Amateur Champion Patty Moore, 66, of Charlotte, N.C. is leading in the Super Senior category after an opening round 4-over-par 76.
Scoring will be provided by the Carolinas Golf Association throughout the championship, offering 9 and 18-hole updates. The Carolinas Golf Association works in association with the North Carolina Women's Golf Association to conduct this championship.
