The 58th Annual North Carolina Women’s Amateur Golf Championship was a wonderful success at Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford. The weather was extremely hot on the day of the practice round and the first day of the tournament, rain to cool things down the second day and perfect for the grand finale on the third day of competition. Maggie Simons of Raleigh topped the leader board scoring 73, 73, 72, totaling 218. Congratulations, Maggie! Kathleen Strandberg put on a show on the 149-yard, par 3, 13th hole with a hole-in-one. Spectators were the witnesses since Hole 13 goes straight uphill and the golfer is unable to see the green. Kathy Schlagel, the tournament chairman, did a superb job putting on this fine tournament. She recruited over 100 of the Trace members to handle everything from the parking to the publicity. Can’t remember when our state championship went any smoother! The 59th Championship will be held at Sapona Country Club in Lexington with Meredith Andrews as tournament chairman. Plans are underway and we will be getting started on the set up this August. With Meredith’s guidance, we will be sure to have a great 2008 tournament!
NCWGA, Inc. held its annual meeting on June 20 at Carolina Trace Country Club. A new slate of officers and directors were presented and voted in. New on the board for the next two years are Lauren Helbein, Lisa Mooneyham and Bea Van Every. Beverly Cassels and Nancy Meyer retired from the board this year. Thank you Beverly and Nancy for your many contributions. You will find the new positions listed on the officers and directors page. In a new position you will find Dotty Lawrence. I am the newly elected president of this fine organization and am honored to have the chance to serve for the next two years. In Sanford, where I have lived all my life, my daily grind is running a horse farm, riding, breeding, training and selling Quarter Horses and hunter type horses for pleasure riding, showing and fox hunting. I started playing golf about 30 years ago as a way to get off the farm for a relaxing day. It has certainly given me that and more. I have met a delightful array of wonderful women who enjoy this great adventure and competition as much as I. I got involved with NCWGA, Inc. in 2000, chairing the state championship at Governors Club in Chapel Hill, and have been on the board of directors since then. Thank you, Kim Clarke, past president, for leaving the Association in excellent shape with so many progressive programs. I only hope to do as good of a job as the past presidents and help to bring the association along in the most positive way.
Please enjoy going though the website and learning more about NCWGA,Inc. Two pages are new to our website: NCWGA GOLFund and The Bulletin Board. Don’t miss out on all NCWGA, Inc. has to offer women golfers in our state.
Dotty Lawrence
