Happy New Year!

It is always exciting to look toward the New Year with great expectations but at the same time it is as exciting to reflect on the past year. I would like to share with you some of the highlights and accomplishments of 2007 for the North Carolina Women’s Golf Association.

  • Hosting one of our most impressive state championships and having the largest group of volunteers and spectators ever to participate.

  • Hosting our largest State Net Team Tournament with 28 teams.

  • Establishing our donation program, NCWGA Golfund.

  • Making our State Play Day an exciting tournament that each member club can participate in, honoring the winners on the plaques received from NCWGA for display at the club site and picturing the winners on our website. 68 clubs and 1,391 women participated.

  • Taking pride in the North Carolina team that competed in the Southeastern Women’s Amateur Team Championship with their exciting win over Florida.

  • Supporting the Women’s Carolinas/Virginia Team matches.

  • Contributing to Junior Girls Golf with donations to WCGA Junior Girls Tournament, 1st Tee of Sandhills, LPGA*USGA Girls Golf Clinics in Raleigh, Dunn and Chapel Hill and Carol S. Petrea Foundation Jr. Girls Golf Clinic.

As for 2008, the best is yet to come!

  • Exciting State Championship will be held at Sapona Country Club, June 16-19. The requirement of a handicap to determine which set of tees a participant plays from has been abolished. Current rules will remain that the Championship and Senior Championship winners are determined from the Championship tees and the Super Senior winner is determined from the State tees.

  • The State Net Team Tournament will again be held at Little River Golf Resort in Carthage, NC and has been made into a two-day competition, September 6 & 7.

  • Supporting the North Carolina SWATCA team to hold onto their championship title.

  • Continuing support for the Carolinas Team

  • Supporting and contributing to Junior Girls Golf through our Pennies Per Stroke program.

We are sad to report that we have accepted two resignations from our board. Bea Van Every and Lauren Helbein have resigned, stating family commitments will not allow them to devote required time to serve on our board. We are delighted that Shirley Scheer from High Point has agreed to serve on our board as State Play Day Chairman.

Thank you for your support of NCWGA, Inc. We serve as your Board of Directors and are always willing to listen and take suggestions to better this wonderful organization.

Toasting to good golfing in 2008!

Dotty Lawrence, President
