Lexington, NC -- Final results of the 59th North Carolina Women's State Amateur Championship hosted by Sapona Country Club in Lexington, NC on Thursday, June 19, 2008. Par 35-36--71. 5905 yards.
20-year-old Joanna Saleeby of Raleigh shot a one-over par round 72 to tie Madison Overbey of High Point and force a sudden death play-off in the final round of the North Carolina Women's State Amateur Championship. Saleeby, who plays for the NC State University Women's Golf Team, had a putt to save par on the 18th hole and take the win outright but her putt came up just short. Overbey hit her tee shot out of bounds on the first hole of sudden death which left the door wide open for Saleeby. Saleeby made four on the long 17th hole for the win. "I just wanted this so badly," said Joanna. "I got up and down a lot today. I finished 4th last week at the Eastern and I have been working hard on my game, but my heart was really in it today. It's so exciting to have my name on a trophy with so much history and prestige."
In the State Tee division, Carole Jones of Hillsborough won by four strokes over Kay Wheeler of Charlotte and Bonnie Montgomery of Jamestown. The State Tee division plays a shorter course.
Players were placed into flights for the final round. The 2009 championship will be held at Wilson Country Club in Wilson, NC. June 15-18, 2009.
This championship is conducted by the North Carolina Women's Golf Association.
