Her playing partner, Mallory Fobes and Furman University assistant coach Ashley Sloup, both carded an even par 36 on the outward nine cutting the margin to three strokes with 9 to play. Sloup opened the second nine with two pars and a birdie on the par 3 - 12th hole moving her to -1 on the round.
One group back, Adam mirrored the scorecard matching with a one under aggregate through the 12th hole. STATE AMATEUR TITLE
Nicole Adam of Pinehurst, NC was trailing first round leader Riley Smyth by two shots at the start of the day. The UNC Chapel Hill commit came out like a veteran collegian firing at pins and playing steady golf. She would then birdie two holes later on the 400 yard par four 15th to move to two under par. At the turn, Adam had picked up four strokes on her closest competitor with the 34 and continued her stellar play on the front nine parring holes 1 through 8 to remain at minus 2. The only bogie of the day came at hole #9. Adam will take a 5 stroke lead into the final day over Mallory Fobes who bettered her day one score by five strokes firing a 73 (151). UVA Golfer Riley Smyth Takes First Round Lead
Riley Smyth had an uneventful day at Grandover's East course and that's just fine with her. On the outward nine the rising Junior for the Cavaliers bogied the second hole but got it back to even on the 510 yard par five sixth. The back nine proved a bit more entertaining as she took the round to minus 1 on the par 4 tenth but, the 385 par four 11th had Smyth posting a double bogie that took her back to plus one. She followed that with another bogie at twelve and then played steady to the closing hole where she posted a birdie for a two shot lead (73) over Nicole Adam (75), Madison Isaacson (75), and Jessica Spicer (75).
