Rachel Kuehn makes a statement posting ELEVEN under to WIN!
Two rising seniors came into Sunday's final round looking to add their name to the traveling trophy of the North Carolina Women's State Amateur. Each had experienced sleeping on the lead. Abbey Hartsell (rising senior Lenoir Rhyne) was the first round leader after her 66 and Rachel Kuehn (rising high school senior) sleeping on the 36 hole lead at -7. Hartsell birdied the first hole to share the lead but made bogie on the par 3 third and then a birdie by Kuehn gave the teenager a 1 stroke lead. Both competitors birdied the par five fourth hole but a bogey for Hartsell followed on hole six and Kuehn went up again. The course was receptive for hard hitting shots at the flag that stuck. Rachel birdied seven and nine and Hartsell birdied eight. A 33 on the front side increased Kuehns' lead to 3 at ten under par. It appeared that the Wake Forest commit would cruise the back when Hartsell bogies the par four tenth hole but..., yes but! But Hartsell wasn't ready to raise the white flag just yet with birdies coming at twelve, thirteen, fourteen and fifteen. Can you say "ALL SQUARE"? Trouble ensued at the par five 16th hole with both players hitting their tee shots wide right. Kuehn managed to navigate through trouble and make par but Hartsell ran into some additional trouble posting a double bogey seven to trail by two strokes with two holes to play. One more birdie for Kuehn at the par 3 17th hole all but sealed the deal. Posting a final round 68, eleven under par for the 54 hole championship, and the title. Abbey Hartsell takes second with an impressive eight under par total. Rachel Mast took third place at 212 with Alexis Kershaw in fourth with 214 and Sarah Spicer at 215.
In the Carolina's Division it came down to the final hole. Susan Beaupied, Patty Moore and Kendra Muir were all tied after playing their 17th hole. Beaupied made a lengthy putt to save par and take the title finishing with a 73 (226).

Kuehn fires 66 on DAY TWO looking to add another title to her resume.
A late round penalty yesterday in a hazard had rising senior Rachel Kuehn thinking what could have been. Today was a different story as the Wake Forest commit came out firing on day two. Starting off 10, Kuehn birdied the 361 yard par four and then added with another birdied two holes later on hole 12 to get to -2 on the day 3 under for the tourney. She bogied 15 but came right back with a birdie at the 460 yard par five - 16th hole to get back to -3. Kuehn closed out the back nine with a birdie and turned with a three under par 33. Steady play on the holes 1 through 4 with pars and then she birdied the 350 yard par four 5th hole to get to 4 under on the day and -5 for the tournament. An eagle at seven had her posting the low round of the day at 66 and taking a 1 stroke lead over first round leader Abbey Hartsell. Hartsell continued solid play posting an even par round of 72 and will definitely be in the hunt on Sunday. Also under par after 36 holes is Rachael Mast who shot 68-73 for a two day total of 141. Final round begins with an eight o'clock shot gun start Sunday.

Abbey Hartsell takes the early lead
Rising senior Abbey Hartsell of Lenoir Rhyne University, took advantage of some early breaks to begin one of her finest rounds in a North Carolina State Amateur. With birdies on the opening par 4, another at the par 5 fourth, a dunk for an eagle on five and then she was settled in for a 32 on the opening round. The momentum continued after the turn with birdies at 12, 14 and the par 5 - 16th. A disappointing bogie at the par 3 17th had her taking the early lead by two strokes over Rachael Mast who fired a 68. Mast just finished her freshman year at UNC Wilmington. A pair of 34's puts her comfortably in the hunt heading into the second round. Sarah Spicer and Rachael Kuehn also posted rounds under par with 70 - 71 respectively. Round two begins at 8a. Saturday.
